Technical Team

Emerald has assembled an experienced management team in conjunction with automotive industry sub-contractors with extensive niche vehicle market experience. The team retains extensive global knowledge of automotive design, manufacturing systems and final vehicle production. The management team has been responsible for bringing 19 different vehicles to market over the past two decades.

Ian Collins, Technical Director

Ian CollinsIan is a Chartered Electrical Engineer with extensive experience in delivery of automotive systems to volume production. Following a ten year period in electronics development at Rover Group, he joined McLaren Automotive where he was appointed chief electrical engineer on the Mercedes SLR supercar programme. In 2007 he took up a position as project director at a startup developing an innovative renewable energy product, bringing it to full production readiness. Ian joined Emerald in 2011.

Ian Clifton, Chief Engineer, 3.5t Platform

Ian has worked in the automotive product development sector for over thirty years. He has held a number of engineering leadership and business development roles at the senior management and board levels. In his early career Ian was part of design teams working across the globe with major OEMs. His projects have included GM passenger vehicles for North America, Ford Icon for India, Ford Connect and Transit projects as well as a number of specialist lightweight bespoke vehicles for European and Asia-Pacific markets. Managing his own Engineering Services Company for ten years from the mid 2000s, Ian then joined Emerald as Chief Programme Engineer and is now supporting the development of Emerald's Hybrid Lightweight Light Commercial Vehicles.

Kevin Elgood, Chief Engineer Body Exterior

Kevin ElgoodKevin has over 40 years of experience in the automotive industry. This includes positions held with Lotus Engineering UK as Head of Vehicle Design, Lotus Engineering Malaysia as CEO, TRW Asia Pacific as Engineering Director, Ricardo UK as Chief Engineer – Vehicle Engineering and General Motors NAO as Design Group Manager – Body. Vehicle projects include the Aston Martin Vanquish, Opel Speedster, Lotus Elise/derivatives, Honda Civic Aerodeck, numerous lightweight projects for high performance and premium vehicles. Other major projects delivered were the set up/running of two Technology Centres, one for TRW based in Shanghai, China, covering all Active and Passive safety systems design and development for the Asia Pacific region and the other for Lotus Engineering based in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia, covering Body and Chassis design and development.

Jonathan Gould, Chief Stylist

Jonathan GouldJonathan has worked in the automotive consultancy sector for over twenty years having started his career with Hawtal Whitting. During this time he has supplied many creative designs to the world’s automotive manufacturers. During the 90s this included the design, build and test of bespoke Bentleys and the Rolls Royce Corniche. From 2001-2007 he was responsible for the design team within Ove Arup & partners, during this time he was the design consultant for the Modec EV project. In 2007 he launched That’s it! Design, supplying 2d & 3d OEM standard design solutions to the automotive industry with a particular emphasis on the niche vehicle market. Jonathan's experience in design is complimented by an understanding and appreciation for the engineering/manufacturing process and the challenges to bring a product to market.

Esther Hills, Head of Engineering TX5

Esther HillsEsther is a Chartered Engineer with over 20 years of experience in automotive engineering. Having started her career at Ricardo Consulting Engineers, she went on to spend 14 years at JLR and during this time completed a PhD in structural dynamics. She’s led vehicle engineering teams including in hybrid research areas, and recently spent 3 years at Castrol/BP leading the Product Testing & Engineering team responsible for the UK engine and vehicle testing of their fuels and lubricants.

Tim Kearney, Chief Engineer Vehicle Integration

Tim KearneyTim is a Chartered Engineer with over 30 years’ experience in the industry. He has worked on both high volume and niche vehicle products. From 2005 to 2010 Tim worked on the ground-breaking Tesla Roadster as Chief Engineer Chassis & Vehicle Package. In addition Tim has worked on numerous vehicle programmes for Lotus Engineering, Aston Martin, Ford and Austin Rover. Tim joined Emerald in September 2014.

Chris McCoy, Chief Engineer Chassis

Chris McCoyA Chartered Engineer with 30 years’ experience in the automotive industry, Chris’s career focus has been the delivery of class leading chassis systems and vehicle dynamics. He delivered a number of chassis design projects for Rover before moving into vehicle dynamics control system design and development in 1995. He specialised in this area, delivering vehicle projects and advanced engineering research for Rover, BMW, Jaguar, Land Rover and TATA over the following years. Chris became Head of Chassis and Dynamics group in the TATA Motors European Technical Centre in 2010, where he led the delivery of chassis concepts and vehicle dynamics for new vehicle and advanced engineering projects. This has included low carbon vehicle technology projects for regenerative braking and dynamics as well as a number of vehicle projects for electric and combustion engine powered passenger cars and commercial vehicles. Chris joined Emerald in February 2016.

Richie Sibal, Chief Engineer, Electrical

Ian CollinsRichie is an electronics engineering graduate with an MBA from the University of Surrey. He joined McLaren in 1996 as a senior systems engineer and has worked on a number of cutting edge development programmes ranging from Formula 1 and Le Mans winning sports cars to the Mercedes-McLaren SLR. In 2005, Richie was appointed Electrical Function Group Manager and successfully led the engineering development and delivery of the electrical and wiring systems for the McLaren MP4-12C and P1 road cars through the complete lifecycle from initial concept through to launch. In 2013, Richie joined Delphi as Customer Electronics Manager (Volkswagen) where he was responsible for the engineering development and delivery of engine control systems for the next generation of VW Group diesel engines. Richie joined Emerald Automotive in June 2014.

Chris Staunton, Chief Engineer Body Structures

Ian CollinsChris joined Toyota in the UK as part of the graduate programme in 1996. In his 8 years at Toyota, Chris worked as a quality engineer on both series and pre-production programmes, which included extensive time in Japan. In 2004 Chris joined McLaren Automotive at the launch of SLR. In 2010 Chris was appointed Function Group Manager Body Panels and Closures, and successfully led the engineering development and delivery of several top hats including MP4-12C and 12C Spider. Chris led the Body Panels and Closures team from concept through to series production on the 650S and 570S programs. Chris joined Emerald Automotive in 2015 and is leading the team in the creation of vehicles using advanced lightweight materials and joining processes.

Steve Swift, Chief Engineer Vehicle Development

Steve SwiftSteve has worked in the automotive industry for over 30 years and brings extensive knowledge of vehicle development and vehicle dynamics in particular with experience covering a range of sectors from heavy commercial vehicles, passenger and sports cars to motorsport and tier 1. A Fellow of the Institute of Mechanical Engineers he was at Lotus engineering for 18 years: latterly as chief chassis engineer and Head of vehicle engineering. For the six years prior to joining Emerald he was the engineering director at the European technical centre of Multimatic, an engineering services business and tier 1 supplier.

David Taitt, Chief Engineer, Powertrain

David TaittDavid is a powertrain and hybrid drivetrain expert with over 30 years experience in automotive research and development. As Managing Director of Lotus Engineering, Mr. Taitt was responsible for securing and delivering major high-volume powertrain engineering programmes for the world’s largest automakers and is regarded as one of the global experts in low volume alternative power vehicles.

Jon Woodmore, Head of Engineering 3.5t Platform

Jon WoodmoreJon has nearly 20 years of experience as an Engineer in the automotive industry, predominantly with global tier-1 suppliers. Having initially spent the first 6 years based in the UK, working on projects in Germany, Hungary and the US, Jon subsequently spent 7 years in Asia and 4 years in the US. Over the years, Jon has led the pursuit, win, delivery and launch of projects with Ford, GM, Fiat Chrysler, BMW, Hyundai/Kia and Tesla, and led development projects with Lincoln, Holden, VW, Aston Martin, Porsche, Audi and Nissan. Separately, Jon has Programme Manager experience leading advanced powertrain development for Visteon and Account Management experience to Ford Asia Pacific. Prior to joining Emerald Automotive, Jon was Director of Purchasing and Supply Chain Management for Hanon Systems, covering 10 sites across the Americas.
